In June 2010, Polar released the new Nike+ compatible WearLink transmitter, a heart rate monitor chest strap that transmits its data wirelessly to all Nike+ compatible devices, and to all Polar watches and HR monitors.
Currently, Nike+ compatible devices include the iPod, iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPhone, and Nike’s own SportBand (an electronic monitor built into an armband).
Besides the Polar transmitter, the only other Nike+ compatible transmitter is the Nike+ sensor, a small piezoelectric accelerometer produced by Nike that is meant to be slipped into a special recessed pocket in Nike+ compatible Nike running shoes, underneath the inner liner.
The Nike+ sensor is able to record the speed and pace of the run, as well as calculate the calories burnt, and transmit the information wirelessly to a nearby Nike plus compatible iPod or SportBand. The iPod probably can be pre-set to give you audio feedback based on certain goals, such as distance covered, calories burnt, or time intervals. For example, it can be programmed to inform you as each mile or half-mile is completed. The iPod can also be programmed to play a specified “PowerSong” if your heart rate slows below the target zone or if your running speed slows down. At the end of a run, the iPod will read out the run statistics, and if you achieve a personal best (fastest mile, longest run etc.) or reach a personal milestone (for example, 250 miles run), the iPod will play pre-recorded congratulations provided by athlete celebrities such as Lance Armstrong and Tiger Woods.
After the exercise session, you can sync your iPod or SportBand with your computer, and view your exercise history and statistics with the iTunes software. You can even choose to upload your data to www.nikeplus.com, where you can compare your statistics with that uploaded by other people, and discuss about exercise strategies on the online forums.
So, if you are a fan of the Nike+ system, do not miss the chance to add HR data to your exercise statistics with the Polar Nike+ WearLink transmitter heart rate monitor chest strap.
